Millions of Americans work out everyday to stay healthy and in shape. Millions more don’t do any type of physical activity. How important is exercise for your health? The American Heart Association tells us that regular physical activity can improve your quality of life and can even lengthen the amount of years you live. They recommend around 150 minutes of exercise each week. Are you meeting that recommendation? Exercise can speed up your circulation and the amount of nutrients your muscles and tissues receive daily. It can also help boost your mood, confidence, appearance, and more. Learn all the many ways that exercise can help your health every day and how you can incorporate it into your schedule!
Exercise is one of the best ways to help prolong your life and to avoid chronic conditions and illnesses. The American Heart Association reports that people can avoid chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, high cholesterol, and more with enough physical activity on a weekly basis. Their suggestion is to receive at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week, or 75 minutes or vigorous exercise. That is about 5 days a week of 30 minutes of exercise. For those with a busy schedule, they can break those 30 minutes up throughout their day to keep their heart pumping and their body moving.
Besides avoiding illness and increasing lifespan, exercise can also help your mental health. The Mayo Clinic reports that almost any form of physical activity can act as a stress reliever. When you work out, your brain creates more positive neurotransmitters (called endorphins) that help boost your mood. That mood boost can increase your self-confidence, relax you, and can decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression. Enough exercise can help you to sleep better as well and can keep your circulation moving. This circulation carries nutrient-rich blood constantly to the organs and tissues that need it. Basically, exercise is extremely beneficial to your health!
Some people are not able to exercise due to chronic conditions, injuries, age, or more. What can those people do? There is a type of exercise called “static exercise”, and it’s a form of exercising that anyone can do. This is also known as “isometrics”. It basically involves focusing on one muscle group in the body and tightening those muscles over and over to keep them strong. For example, you can support yourself against a wall in a sitting position. You aren’t lifting any weights, but your body receives quite the workout keeping those muscles tight.
Your body performs little to no movement with exercises such as these, however, you are increasing your muscular strength and endurance. These exercises are great for people who can’t exercise the conventional way or who don’t have much time to devote to physical activity. For those who struggle with chronic conditions or injuries, physical therapy is also a great way to stay active and rehabilitate the body.
There is a physical therapy service for every person. Each person is unique and has different needs as well as conditions. When injured or living with a chronic condition, many patients seek out invasive procedures or medicines to curb their symptoms. However, these patients can struggle for many years with their symptoms without actual relief. Many medicines simply mask pain and symptoms, but they don’t do much to actually stop what is causing the ailment. When it comes to invasive surgeries, sometimes they are not effective or they could cause more damage than before. That is why we love focusing on natural healing methods of rehabilitation.
